TOPICS

Business Activities
  • Water Supply and Sewage Treatment Division

Japan's water supply and wastewater treatment systems have developed in line with the country's rapid economic growth, and now boast a high level of penetration and good water quality. In recent years, however, they have faced a number of challenges, including deteriorating water quality due to climate change, aging facilities, budget cuts due to a declining population, and a shortage of skilled engineers. Hitachi is contributing to the improvement of the global water environment by developing and proposing products and systems that address these issues, making full use of its water treatment machines, control systems, and IT technologies that utilize AI.

  • Water Control and Utilization Division

Water control to protect people from flooding. Water utilization to enrich society. Water environments to create comfortable living. Rivers are increasingly involved in our lives. We contribute to the creation of a comfortable living environment by utilizing various IT technologies to protect people's lives from the disasters of heavy rain caused by typhoons and other factors, to ensure a healthy water cycle, and to enable accurate and efficient river management.

  • Industrial Manufacturing Division

We provide total seamless solutions that fully utilize green digital technology to solve our customers' problems and contribute to the realization of smart factories in the fields of engineering for utility facilities such as water, air, and electricity, and operation and maintenance of factory facilities at manufacturing bases for electronics/semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, chemical products, etc.

  • Social Information Systems Division

We provide solutions for environmental disaster prevention, such as radiation monitoring and floodgate control, as well as security solutions using authentication technology and video surveillance. In addition, we are developing next-generation solutions using AI and IoT in the areas of resource recycling, road infrastructure maintenance management, and port operations, contributing to the realization of a sustainable society and increased productivity.

  • IoT Service Solutions Division

In addition to providing products and systems, we are developing businesses that provide maintenance, management, operations, and solutions closely related to our customers' business operations. We are working to build new businesses in collaboration with various companies and water and sewage utilities by providing solutions that utilize IoT to help solve problems as cloud services.

Distinctive Technology
  • General Water Treatment Facilities

We provide a full range of services from design to construction for water supply and wastewater treatment facilities, including dust collectors, sludge scrapers, aerators, filtration equipment, and membrane separation equipment. Typical membrane separation equipment we supply includes MBR (Membrane Bio Reactor), membrane-type water purification and unit-type membrane filtration equipment.

  • gPegasush Nitrogen Treatment Process

Pegasus is a process that efficiently treats nitrogen in sewage and wastewater. By adding a carrier with microorganisms immobilized in a special gel at high concentrations to the biological reaction tank, it promotes the reaction that nitrifies ammonia, achieving fast and effective treatment.

  • Monitoring and Control System (AQUAMAX)

We provide a full range of services for water and wastewater projects, from system design to commissioning. AQUAMAX is the core of this system, and it is a monitoring and control system that can be incrementally expanded or partially upgraded, with a scalable architecture, seamless integration, and a business support type HMI.

  • Water Operations Planning Technology

Water operations planning technology is essential to ensuring a stable water supply. We develop solutions that achieve a balance between "stable supply," which involves appropriately distributing the water treatment capacity of multiple water treatment plants, and "energy conservation," which involves reducing the energy consumption of water intake and water supply pumps.

  • Wastewater treatment control technology

We model and perform real-time control of the nitrification and denitrification reactions that occur in wastewater treatment plants. By monitoring the ammonia concentration and controlling the nitrification reaction, we can maintain water quality while reducing over- and under- aeration and reducing fan power consumption.

  • Image processing application technology

Using camera images, image processing is used to measure traffic volume and vehicle speed, and to detect abnormal events such as traffic jams, broken-down vehicles, and vehicles driving in the wrong direction. It automatically detects abnormal events (stopped vehicles, slow-moving vehicles, vehicles taking evasive action, and fallen objects) and measures the length of traffic jams, thereby supporting the safety of drivers and reducing the burden on road administrators.

  • Environmental Disaster Prevention Solutions

We collect data on atmospheric radiation levels, air pollutants, river water levels, and rainfall in real time using telemetry equipment, and then monitor this data centrally at a monitoring station via a wide area network. We contribute to the realization of a safe and secure society by monitoring this data 24 hours a day, 365 days a year through a highly reliable system and making it available to the public.

  • Carbon neutral solutions

We help our customers achieve their decarbonization goals by providing energy-saving and carbon-neutral products and technologies. The hydrogen co-firing power generator developed jointly with Denyo Co., Ltd. provides carbon-neutral electricity by co-firing hydrogen produced from solar power and biofuel.

Water Infrastructure in Papua New Guinea

Hitachi is promoting the development of water environment solutions overseas to help solve global problems such as water shortages and water pollution, and is implementing projects in more than 40 countries. In Papua New Guinea, we provide high-quality wastewater treatment systems that help restore marine ecosystems and revitalize the fishing and tourism industries, as well as promote the health of local residents and reduce medical costs. Hitachi will continue to develop its social innovation business globally, with the aim of achieving the SDGs and improving people's quality of life.

  • Aiming for safe, resilient, and sustainable water through public-private partnerships (PPPs)

In Japan, the operation of water and wastewater services is increasingly being outsourced to the private sector to address aging facilities and the need to expand service areas. In the future, public-private partnerships (PPPs) will be promoted, including comprehensive outsourcing that includes not only maintenance and management, but also fee collection and meter reading. The Hitachi Group has positioned the water environment solutions business as a key division of its social innovation business, and in addition to providing equipment, we are expanding our operational services to contribute to the conservation and improvement of the water environment.

  • IoT-based cloud services for water and wastewater businesses

In recent years, water and sewage businesses have faced challenges such as the need for additional investment due to aging equipment, declining business revenues, and the transfer of know-how due to a decline in skilled engineers. Hitachi offers gO&M Support Digital Solutionsh, which use IoT to collect facility and operational information in the cloud, and AI and XR technologies to support the visualization and efficiency of operations and maintenance work. We support the solution of management problems with the digital innovation "Lumada".

  • Towards a decarbonized society

Hydrogen is an energy source that does not emit CO2 when used, and there is a need to build a supply chain to achieve a decarbonized society. Hitachi is conducting a demonstration project in Namie-cho, Fukushima Prefecture, to build a supply chain using hydrogen and adjust electricity supply and demand, and is contributing to the expansion of hydrogen use through IT and products such as hydrogen co-firing power generators and electricity certification using blockchain technology.
